Abstract
This paper discusses a compact dual band antenna structures for automotive and aerospace applications. Two dual band electromagnetic band gap (EBG) element geometries are presented that have a reduced cell dimension compared to the wavelength yet sufficient bandwidth for mobile communication applications. The EBGs were combined with a printed planar monopole and gave satisfactory performance at two mobile communication frequency bands. There was suppression of the back radiation at both bands of 5 dB or better even for a small EBG and the antenna was platform tolerant.
