Abstract :
The narrow bandwidth of wireless communication network limited the applications of the remote image surveillance in the unattended substation. A surveillance image coding algorithm is presented in the paper. First, the metering area of digital instruments is extracted based on edge detection and mathematical morphology. Then, the metering area is set as the region of interest (ROI). By utilizing the ROI encoding, the surveillance image can be transmitted in JPEG2000 format in the limited bandwidth. As a result, the monitoring center can get the image in real time. Experiment results show that the proposed method is feasible in terms of image quality and compression ratio, narrow bandwidth and real-time transmission of images.
