Abstract
The paper presents an experimental investigation of the near- and far-fields of strip-conductor “coils” used in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at 7-Tesla. Due to the size of the strip conductors of about one quarter wavelength, in addition to the near fields, strong radiation is produced which reduces the Q-factor of the coils. Comparisons of loop-type and dipole-type coils show distinct differences in the field distributions and field magnitudes and explain the success of the dipole-type in coil array applications.
