Abstract
This paper presents a compact omnidirectional antenna based on the concept of frequency reconfigurability. The structure is a compact shorted microstrip omnidirectional antenna which has already been miniaturized by a slot loading technique. To fight bandwidth reduction created by miniaturization, a varactor diode is placed on the structure to fulfil modern telecommunication standard requirements using frequency reconfigurability. Based on this technique, an electronically tunable antenna with a frequency range of 670730MHz is designed using a single varactor diode with a capacitance range of 1 to 4 pF. A miniature dipole-like antenna with typical dimensions (width x length x height) of λ0 /7 × λ0 /55 × λ0 /55 (λ0 being the free space operating wavelength) is obtained, which makes possible the integration of this miniature antenna inside small wireless systems.
