Abstract
Fault levels have increased over the years with the development of networks and growth in loads. Networks today are seeing constraints on the connection of new load and especially generation. Traditional solutions include replacement of plant, splitting of networks, or installing reactors. These are either expensive, or impose restrictions on the availability and flexibility of networks. A range of novel solutions are available, in particular fault limiters which allow existing plant to be used while providing higher levels of security. EDF Energy is part of a partnership which aims to conduct trials of alternative technologies. It is hoped that this will allow faster connection of new load and generation.
