Abstract
A 3-D numerical model is presented to study the effect of blood vessel locations on high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) temperature field. The model is based on the Westervelt formula and Pennes bio-heat transfer equation. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is used to obtain the temperature distribution induced by HIFU procedures. Temperature rise and focal area are then shown for different locations of blood vessel. Results show that when the blood vessel is located on the ultrasound beam, significant reduction in temperature rise is observed due to blood flow. If there is a gap between the beam axis and blood vessel, the latter part of focal region is no longer symmetric. It exists a negligible change in the peak temperature rise for gap=1.0mm or gap=3.0mm, compared with no blood model.
