Abstract
A good communication protocol can ensure the quality of services and balance the flexibility and performance in the on-chip network. This paper presents an on-chip congestion avoidance communication protocol, and introduces a deadlock-free, adaptive routing algorithm. In order to meet the needs of a wide range of applications, the protocol provides differentiated services, which offer different levels of service quality for different data streams. The protocol is easy to implement and reusable. It provides reliable transmission with good fairness, high efficiency and stability. According to the OPNET modeler simulation study, the protocol has a significant improvement on both average link utilization and end-to-end delay. The simulation results can be used to guide the design of on-chip routers.
