Abstract
Planar received signal strength (RSS) localization at 60.5 GHz is investigated and presented. For the first time, short range RSS localization at 60 GHz is demonstrated. The RSS between the transmitter and receiver is first measured on various base materials such as metal, wood and millimetre wave (mm-wave) absorber. RSS measurements are also performed with the transmitters and receiver elevated 20 cm above the base. It is observed that the RSS measurement on the mm-wave absorber and with the 20 cm elevation have the least multipath effects and are suitable for planar localization using RSS. Splines are fitted to the measured data and implemented in the localization algorithm for position estimation. By using either mm-wave absorber or elevating the transmitters and receiver, the mean localization error obtained for both cases is 3 cm.
