Abstract :
This paper proposes the radio-over-fibre transmission ultra-high definition television (UHDTV) compressed signals using WiMedia ultra-wide band (UWB) standard radio signals in fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) access networks. The integrated FTTH architecture for UWB-over-fibre distribution is proposed and analysed by simulation. The results demonstrate the successful transmission and reception of more than 50 UHDTV channels over next generation UWB radio signals employing an electro optical conversion. The optical transmission resulted has been evaluated the over large standard single mode fibre (SSMF) links in order to analyse very high data rates distribution into residential environments. The full UWB band comprising the 14 bands can be distributed up to 20 km. If only the first 3 bands (band group 1) are transmitted, 60 km SSMF can be reached. Finally a techno-economic analysis of the deployment cost of the architecture is included. According to the CAPEX analysis presented it can be produced savings ranging from 6% to 30% depending on the number of users served.
