Abstract :
The international telecommunications system, evolving ocean observation systems, naval undersea training ranges, and numerous other subsea systems depend on the reliable connection of components to cables. Most global-scale submarine cable systems retain standby repair services through maintenance agreements with a handful of cable ship fleets. Owners and operators of smaller-scale cable systems may not require and often cannot afford this approach to repairing system faults and restoring operations. To fill this need, an SAIC product, QuickTerm, is in the final stages of development. SAIC QuickTerm is a universal cable termination capable of rapid infield assembly, testing, and installation. This termination technology serves as a termination for the fiber optics and single conductor with a flanged interface into the pressure vessel. Atsea assembly and in-the-field validation testing of each unit are complete within a 12-hour window off any vessel of opportunity. Such innovative technology is ideal for both new system applications and lower cost repair or replacement in legacy systems.
