Abstract
This paper deals with the proposal of the Government of India to permit 51% Foreign Direct investment in Indian Multi Brand Retail (MBR) industry and its perceived effect on Indian economy. Important arguments made in favour and against the proposal have been listed out in length to understand the basic issue. The views of the Indian retailers -the important stake holder in this issue have been elicited by a field survey in Trichirapalli, Tamil nadu. The findings of the survey has been presented and discussed in detail. The paper also, discusses foreign experiences on this issue besides offering suggestions and recommendations for overcoming the present impasse faced by the Indian government.
