Abstract
This article discusses the role of energy-efficient cloud server-on-chip solutions to reduce the total cost of ownership and the ecological impact of cloud computing data centers. A solution is envisaged exploiting a many core platform based on the new ARMv8 family, which extends the energy efficiency of the classic 32-b RISC ARM architecture to the server computing domain through a 64-b instruction set. A service-oriented Network on Chip (NoC) communication infrastructure is used to avoid inter-core communication bottlenecks. Implementation/performance figures on nano-scale CMOS technology are also provided.
