Abstract
In order to increase the efficiency of a PMSM drive for an electric vehicle an inverter with low conduction and switching losses is required. Further an inverter with less voltage harmonics reduces the iron losses in the PMSM. To achieve these requirements the paper proposes a three-level MOSFET inverter with active neutral point clamping and soft switching at turn-on. The resonant circuit for soft switching is optimized in such a way that the parts of this circuit have low conduction time and low rms current. Therefore, this circuit can be built using very small and cheap elements.
