Abstract :
A novel adaptive segment output stage used in PWM DC-DC converter is proposed. By auto selecting the optimum width of the power MOSFET according to the load current, it can help to improve conversion efficiency. Two different circuits, current sensing (CS) and time-digital converter (TDC) are presented to estimate the load current. The CS and TDC alternately work in continuous mode (CCM) and discontinuous mode (DCM). A buck DC-DC converter with the adaptive segment output stage is designed and simulated in a 0.13μm standard CMOS process. The simulation results show that the maximum efficiency improvement of the converter with adaptive segment reaches 8% at 5mA compared to converter without segment.
