Abstract
Many applications powered by batteries need high performance, high step up dc-dc converters. As an example, for a high intensity discharge lamp ballast used in automotive headlamps in which the startup voltage is up to 400 V in which DC-DC converters should boost very low voltage of 20–30V to 400V. When the converter switches are turned on and off at faster rates to meet dynamic and steady state requirements, the losses add on in the converter. Switching on at zero voltage and Switching off the switches when current through them is zero is one possible solution to minimize the switching losses which can be achieved with the help of resonating circuit. One should have tradeoff between high switching frequency and switching losses. With an optimum design of circuit parameters and resonating elements, high step up voltage can be obtained. One such approach where an input DC voltage of 70V is boosted to 542V with Zero Voltage and Zero Current Switching (ZVZCS), with reduced switching frequency compared to all existing configurations is presented in this paper. The proposed scheme is justified with the help of simulation results using PSIM software.
