Abstract
A unified power flow controller (UPFC) is an advanced member of the group of flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS). In this paper, the performance of UPFC is investigated to minimize the power loss in the transmission line using load flow analysis. Loss allocation is an important aspect in determining the cost of power transmission. This paper focuses on the steady-state modeling of UPFC for the implementation in the Newton-Raphson (NR) power flow algorithm. A MATLAB program has been developed to implement the UPFC in the Newton-Raphson (NR) power flow program. Case studies have been performed on IEEE 30-bus system to minimize the transmission power losses. The effects of UPFC allocation on power system steady-state operation have been investigated.
