  • Abstract
In recent years, much attention has been focused upon the permanent magnet machines; especially in electric vehicle hybrid applications. Although important improvements have been performed, much work is still required. Of particular interest are the improvements of the torque production capability and the minimization of the iron losses. The present paper investigates the effect of the number magnet of segments on a surface mounted permanent magnet machine (SMPM) performances. The main idea of this survey is to set the distribution of the airgap flux density by segmenting the magnet pole into several elementary magnet blocks. The machine output torque and core losses for different number magnet of segments are computed. In the modeling of these losses, analytical models, considering the non sinusoidal induction waveform through the magnetic circuit, coupled with a 2 dimensional time-stepped finite element analysis (FEA) has been used.
