Abstract
We have developed a new monolithic tunable laser for the deployment in a wavelength-routing switch. The new laser is based on two semiconductor ring resonators placed in parallel, where each resonator plays the role of a wavelength selective filter as well as a loop-mirror to form the necessary laser cavity, hence enhancing the Vernier tuning mechanism. By the control of a single electrode, the device exhibits stable wavelength tuning with a step of 200 GHz over a wide tuning range of more than 35 nm. The variation of the laser output power with tuning is less than 1 dB even with an injected current of around 20 mA.
