Abstract
In the literature, Poisson or ON/OFF models have been commonly used to characterize the primary arrival process in cognitive radio networks (CRNs). In this paper, the performance analysis of CRNs with VoIP traffic considering either Poisson or ON/OFF models for the primary arrival characterization is evaluated and compared. To provide a fair basis of comparison for the ON/OFF and Poisson arrival models, the same both resource utilization factor and mean white space duration in both arrival models are considered. To the best of the authors´ knowledge, this performance comparison of CRNs with VoIP traffic under these arrivals models has not been reported in the literature yet. Numerical results show that system performance metrics (new session blocking probability, packet dropping probability, and packet delay) are more pessimistic under the Poisson model than under the ON/OFF model. This is due to the fact that the variance of the white space duration is greater in the Poisson model than in the ON/OFF model.
