Abstract
Information Technology has been reported as a vital energy consumer in the world. About two to five percent of the global total energy production is utilized by IT infrastructure. Therefore, IT research scientists have started proposing solutions to reduce energy consumption through smart approaches. While some of these approaches use renewable energy resources to power on computing devices, other approaches are considering decreasing IT infrastructure capability. These approaches, even though they may result in the reduction of emissions, do not consider the needs of adaptive services and consumer´s demand. In this paper we propose a classification of services operation modes, discuss types of power supplied to a data center, and define the relationships between them. In addition, we demonstrate our proposed polymorphic service solution with the cooperation of DVFS approach to achieve a significant power consumption reduction in data centers. Our approach is an applicable for service that has different capacity level of operation such as web enabled applications.
