Abstract :
The optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is a radio-frequency (RF) source that utilizes lengths of optical fiber in a ring resonator to create low-phase-noise signals. In this work, we demonstrate a novel fiber-optic acoustic sensor by measuring the modulation sidebands induced on the OEO´s RF signal by an acoustic tone impinging on the fiber spool in the OEO. The narrow linewidth and high oscillating frequency of the OEO results in a sensor with both high signal-to-noise ratios and high spectral resolution.
