Abstract :
In this issue of IEEE Control Systems Magazine, we speak with Dawn Tilbury, who is a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan. She received the B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota and the M.S. and Ph.D. in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley. She has a joint appointment as a professor of electrical engineering and computer science and is currently the associate dean for Research and Graduate Education in the College of Engineering. She has served on the IEEE Control Systems Society Board of Governors, on the editorial board of IEEE Control Systems Magazine, and on many organizing and program committees of the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control and the American Control Conference, including in the positions of publications chair, vice-chair for student affairs, program chair, and general chair. She coauthored the book Feedback Control of Computing Systems (Wiley-IEEE Press, 2004) with Joseph L. Hellerstein, Yixian Diao, and Sujay Parekh. Honors include the 2001 Donald P. Eckman Award from the American Automatic Control Council. She is coauthor of an award-winning Web site for teaching control systems using Matlab, has written over 150 journal and conference papers, and is a Fellow of IEEE and ASME. Her research interests are in control theory and its application in many different domains, including reconfigurable manufacturing systems and autonomous ground vehicles.
