  • Abstract
    Fast Handover for Mobile IPv6 was proposed to reduce the handover latency at layer 3 (L3). But at layer 2 (L2), authentication and re-authentication phase results in most of the handover delay. It is therefore necessary to reduce layer 2 authentication delay. We propose an improved scheme based on EAP-SIM for authentication and re-authentication. Our proposed scheme for handover uses pre-authorization for authentication at L2 and FMIPv6 at L3. An MN can be pre-authorized at the AAA server during the FMIPv6 layer 3 pre-signalling which occurs prior to layer 2 handover. This would reduce the L2 handover delay as MN is already authorized at AAA server and only reauthentication is to be performed at local RADIUS server.
