Abstract :
Detailed first-principle models of grinding processes, while very satisfactory for simulation purposes, are not well suited for the development of control schemes due to their high level of complexity. In this study, a low-order model describing the time evolution of the particle distribution in a few size intervals is proposed. Using a maximum-likelihood approach, the model is identified and its good agreement with a detailed first-principle model is demonstrated. The model development and identification procedure are illustrated with a fed-batch grinding process. Finally, new control objectives, expressed in terms of the model state variables, are discussed.
