Abstract
The design of a robust nonlinear controller for idle speed control of an automotive engine is described. First a nonlinear controller design based on sliding mode theory is developed. A nonlinear observer is used for state estimation and the resulting nonlinear controller-observer pair is implemented on an engine test facility. The results of rig trials are presented and discussed. The robustness of the control strategy is confirmed.
