Abstract
Exploiting resonance in metamaterials for unusual bulk refractive indices is frequently hampered by a corresponding narrow operating bandwidth. We numerically investigate the role of a metamaterial substrate on the refractive index bandwidth of an otherwise homogenized metamaterial. As expected there is a trade-off between loss and bandwidth but with some significant and useful features.
