Abstract
This paper analyzes the principles and the the underlying mathematical model for acoustic based shooter and launch detection systems which are crucial for border and homeland security. Acoustic based shooter detection systems use the muzzle blast and acoustic shock waves, that are formed during the flight of the bullet, and process the measurements to compute the shooter´s location with high accuracy. Azimuth, elevation angle and range of the shooter are among the important parameters to be estimated.
