Abstract
In this paper, a direct-drive, hybrid flux double-sided planar motor is proposed. The manufacture and assembly process are simpler compared to the LEGO planar motor. The common design process of the motor is elaborated. The propulsion force outputs from both longitudinal and transverse flux are calculated with magnetic fields analyzed by FEM. The force-to-volume ratios of the motor is obtained and results show that the values for either axis of movement are higher compared to the LEGO planar machine with improved motor performance. It can be expected that the machine find its applications in the 2D, direct-drive motion control area.
