Abstract
The ATSC 3.0 physical layer team has actively been identifying technology elements for adoption in the new ATSC 3.0 physical layer standard which significantly improves performance and robustness beyond current ATSC 1.0 levels. OFDM based waveforms, LDPC forward error correction are two such technologies which enable very robust broadcasts with low overhead for both stationary and mobile receivers. Flexible signaling is another requirement from broadcasters that has been addressed in the new standard. This paper provides an overview of the current state of the ATSC 3.0 physical layer and outlines the technologies, performance, signaling aspects and discusses how the standard is expected to evolve over the coming years.
