Abstract :
After the energy crisis of the 1970s, Robert V. Pound (1919???2010), then professor of physics at Harvard University and later a recipient of the National Medal of Science [1], put forward a modest proposal [2] in 1980. He felt that conventional means of heating houses and buildings were very inefficient, since they involved not only keeping the inhabitants warm, but also (in the process) heating all the air inside the room (imagine a multistory atrium). Furthermore, given the time required to bring a room to a comfortable temperature, spaces were kept warm whether or not they were occupied. Prof. Pound´s idea was to think of each room in a building as a microwave cavity, where a magnetron discreetly hid den behind an opening in one of the walls could be turned on to warm the inhabitants instantly, without wasting energy on heating the air.
