The sonic screwdriver first appeared on ´Doctor Who with Patrick Troughton - the second Doctor - and it was used simply to unlock doors and undo screws. But over the years, the sonic screwdriver has gathered several other functions and has become the timewarp equivalent of a Swiss Army knife.
