Abstract :
An enhanced Newton optimal power flow (OPF) approach is presented. The OPF deals with minimisation of the system MW losses while satisfying system security constraints by adjusting reactive power controllers. Programming techniques and treatments of inequality constraints are enhanced. The presented programming techniques reduce the computer memories required and improve the numerical stability while solving the algebraic equations of necessary conditions for optimality. The enhanced treatment for the inequality constraints enables Newton OPF to identify correct binding inequality constraints efficiently. A practical 217-bus system, namely Taipower system, is used to demonstrate the capability of the enhanced Newton OPF
