Abstract :
The generation and transmission of solitons produced by direct modulation of laser diodes are numerically analyzed. We found that when biasing the laser slightly below threshold solitons are generated under both periodic and pseudo-random word modulation. However, when the bias current is above threshold it is not possible to generate solitons under pseudo-random word modulation due to pattern effects produced by the random sequences of input bits. A significant reduction of the timing jitter due to the pulse-to-pulse frequency jitter is obtained when the laser is biased slightly below threshold for any modulation frequency and modulation regime.<>
