Abstract
In order to investigate the hard magnetic properties of rapidly quenched Sm2 Co17 -type multi-element alloy ribbons, Sm2 (Co1-x Fex )17 (0 ¿ x ¿ 0.5) and Sm2 (Co1-x Mnx )17 (0 ¿ X ¿ 0.25) alloy ribbons were fabricated under various conditions and the effects of the third element on the hard magnetic properties and structure were examined. A remarkable increase in the value of i Hc was found at high roll velocities (VR ). The maximum value of i Hc was found to be about 7 kOe for Sm-Co-Mn alloy ribbons and about 2 kOe for Sm-Co-Fe alloy ribbons. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that an ordered Sm2 CO17 phase was formed at low VR , while a single disordered Sm2 Co17 phase (TbCu7 -type) was formed at high VR .
