Abstract
Much discussion of software methodologies has appeared in the literature in recent years. Many new techniques for software design and implementation have been presented. The real test of any approach is in its application. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the software development methodology used within the Network Operator Services Laboratory of Bell Laboratories. This methodology has evolved (and continues to evolve) over a number of years and many software product development cycles. It is viewed as fundamental to the success of the Laboratory to meet major project schedules with high quality. Within this paper, recent experience from the implementation of the Calling Card Service capability is discussed. This discussion will hopefully benefit developers and managers who are evaluating their own approach to large-scale software development.
