Abstract
Severe economic penalties are imposed by constraints on energy transfers imposed by contingent voltage support problems in power systems. The analysis outlined uses the granularity that characterizes power networks to define zones within which reactive reserves must match contingent reactive requirements in order to avoid voltage support problems. Tracking of reserves relative to contingent requirements provides an online indication of safe operating conditions, including energy transfers, relative to postcontingency conditions
