    Techniques for measuring the subtle changes that precede an earthquake are described. These are: seismometers, for measuring seismic waves; measurements of changes in rock resistivity with pressure; strain measurement; and satellite laser ranging and very-long-baseline interferometry to measure plate movements.<>
