Abstract
It is shown theoretically that the presence of amplitude modulation is necessary for optimum performance of a dispersion supported transmission system. For 10 Gbit/s nonregenerated transmission at λ=1.5 μm over more than 300 km standard singlemode fibre, an amplitude modulation index of 0.5 compared to 0.01 is expected to increase the receiver sensitivity by 7-14 dB
