Abstract :
The power and polarisation dependence of modulation instability were experimentally investigated and used to obtain a novel, simple and accurate method for the measurement of Kerr coefficient in optical fibres. New results on dispersion shifted fibres are reported, giving n 2=2.64×1020m2/W at 1553 nm (linear polarisation)
