Abstract
In the light of his experience of software development in industry and lecturing to students of software engineering, the author identifies seven shortcomings in new graduates which would be better remedied at university than by training in industry. His views are nominally aimed at software engineering education, but it is felt that they are appropriate to engineering curricula in general
