Abstract :
Measurements of fluctuations in the bit error rates of 2.5 and 10 Gbit/s optical transmission through a concatenation of polarisation mode dispersion (PMD) and polarisation-dependent loss (PDL) elements are presented. The result confirms that combined PMD+PDL effects introduce fluctuations larger than those estimated by simple root mean squared sum rules. When frequency-chirped optical sources are used, power penalties due to the combined effect of PMD and PDL are significantly increased
