Abstract
The theory of optimal control for time delay systems and the quadratic performance criterion is presented from two points of view: 1) the geometric approach, which yields a maximum principle, and 2) the dynamic programming-Carathéodory approach, which yields a feedback controller synthesis. The relationship of the two approaches is discussed, as well as extensions of the theory to non-linear problems and nonlinear performance criterion.
