The eccentric engineer

I received a rather nice email this morning thanking me for a Christmas card that had just arrived at a friend´s house in Germany. My pleasure in receiving the email, which had travelled across Europe in a couple of seconds, was only tempered by the fact that the card it mentioned had taken over a month to travel in the opposite direction. But it did remind me of one of the greatest changes of the modern era.
