Abstract
A description is given of the installation and evaluation of the first prototype rooftop cool storage HVAC unit in Rahway, New Jersey, in 1986-7. This site was selected because the building roof could support the storage tank and the HVAC unit without any structural changes or roof reinforcement. Also, the site did not require any changes in the existing utility electric service. Experiences during installation and assessment of this rooftop cool storage unit are discussed. As a result of the test, it was concluded that this prototype could be a viable option for small commercial customers. The average 1987 on-peak electrical energy usage of the unit was about 18% of the total usage. Approximately 82% of the electrical energy was utilized during off-peak hours
