Abstract
This paper describes a method for classification and estimation of the most common disturbances on quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. The method is based on the evaluation of the statistical moments of the two-dimensional distribution of the received symbols of the constellation diagram. In the paper, the operating principle of the method is shown, and its implementation on a commercially available instrument is presented. The method has been validated with several simulated and actual European cable television (TV) signals compliant to the ETSI ETS 300429 standard. The results of these experimental investigations are also presented.
