The clymer drive system
Abstract :
The high-speed and the transonic wind tunnels required high-powered (15,000-40,000 hp) fan drives capable of holding very stable constant speed for relatively long periods of time while data was being taken from the wind tunnel. These requirements could best be met by the Clymer drive system which utilizes the wound rotor induction motor with a slip energy recovery system. To recover the slip energy an adjustable speed motor generator set consisting of a synchronous motor driving a DC generator was chosen. Also discusses new Scherbius machines required for special 8-ft transonic pressure wind tunnel that could be pressurized to better simulate flight conditions at transonic speeds at Langley Research Center
