Abstract
In this letter, a method based on time sampling and signal processing is proposed to measure the phase noise of any unstable optically generated carrier. We could overcome the difficulties of measuring the phase noise of a passively mode-locked laser output signal with 60-GHz repetition frequency due to frequency instability by replacing a spectrum analyzer with a digital storage oscilloscope, which samples signal in time domain. A mathematical approach based on frequency demodulation is used to separate the phase noise and the amplitude noise in measurements. The precision of this method has been validated by comparing the measured results with the commercial tool measurements.
