Abstract
We show that balanced forms are canonical and continuously parameterize the set of systems of a given order which are asymptotically stable, minimal, and have distinct singular values. The advantage of the balanced canonical form over other classical canonical forms lies precisely in the guaranteed stability and minimality of the parameterization. We also derive formulas allowing the synthesis of systems using gradient methods in balanced form.
