  • Abstract
A superconducting Nb/sub 3/Sn magnet has been operated in the absence of liquid cryogen utilising the cooling power of a 2 stage Gifford-McMahon cryocooler. The magnet generated 2.0 T in a 17 cm bore at a current of 145 A and a temperature of 9.5 K. Current was supplied via high T/sub c/ BiSrCaCuO (2212) current leads. The magnet demonstrated long term stability and was successfully quenched without any damage to the system; recovery was complete within 40 minutes.<>
