Abstract
This paper proposes a black-box model-based design method for a transient electromagnetic (EM) and thermal (TM) problem, where EM and TM material properties are strongly coupled with each other. For a practical and efficient black-box modeling, the Kriging method is combined with a hyper-cubic local window and design sensitivity values extracted from surrogate models are exploited to obtain an optimum. Such unique design scheme facilitates controlling EM and TM performances simultaneously. In addition, it can reduce the number of design iterations during the optimization process drastically. The proposed method is tested for a strongly coupled induction heating system where the design goal is to achieve a uniform temperature distribution on the surface of a metal workpiece within a given heating time duration.
